JML are a global organisation specialising in ecommerce and TV home shopping. In 2016, when moving offices across London, the team at JML were tasked with uprooting over 100 physical servers hosting a range of business-critical applications.

Over the years, JML’s infrastructure had sprawled as changing IT Directors imparted different approaches. It was time for the maintenance and management of technology to be brought under control, freeing up JML’s tech team to have a far more positive business impact than their current provision allowed.

After assessing a variety of approaches, Cloudhelix suggested–and successfully implemented–an Office 365 migration and a move to virtualised, dedicated cloud infrastructure. Not only did this assist in bringing JML’s technology under control, but it also removed the issue of maintaining email software and Backups across the business. Step by step, we then began the process of virtualizing JML’s infrastructure, allowing for our experts to manage the technology remotely beyond project completion.

The biggest challenge of the project came in the form of a fixed deadline for the office relocation. While working closely with various stakeholders to capture, assess and deliver requirements, our team planned and tested the migration to ensure it went off without a hitch alongside the wider JML relocation.

The dedicated platform was built using storage IO acceleration, fusion IO and high performance 10g fabric which gave JML the confidence that any application would run on the dedicated environment, regardless of its demand for input/output per second (IOPS).

Beyond migration, all of the physical hardware has been decommissioned, reclaiming valuable office space. The ongoing cloud management meant that business processes could be streamlined, freeing up IT teams to support the trajectory of the business. Not only has this transformed the perception of IT within the business by making them increasingly valuable, the IT function today assists the rest of JML in a workshop environment to inform stakeholders while planning new and innovative applications.
